On Engine rebuilding: To bore or not to bore-or to hone.

Whenever you rebuild an older engine, usually some work has to be done on the piston cylinder, which is what the piston and rings move inside.
If the piston rings are wore too much, they can not properly help lubricate the cylinder, thus scoring, which is the process of the steel rings gouging into the cylinder.
This is what a cylinder that needs bored out looks like

The manual of the engine should indicate how many thousandths or Millimeters the cylinder should be bored out, to fit a oversized piston w/ rings.

ON HONING

Honing or DE GLAZING the cylinder is the process of inserting a hone into the cylinder attached to a drill.
Honing DOES NOT remove deep gouges, just minor surface scratches.
The purpose of honing is to rough up the cylinder to hold oil better and help the piston rings seat properly.
IF THIS STEP IS NOT DONE, YOUR RINGS WILL NEVER SEAT PROPERLY, INCREASING WEAR.
